How to make Spell Oils

Witchcraft, Ritual, Magick or Altar Oils

Spell oils have been used for a very long time throughout human history. Our ancestors would heat animal fat and add various herbs in order to make their oils. Luckily for us today we don’t have to slaughter any animals in order to achieve our goals of making spell oils it’s just as easy as making a trip to your local grocery and metaphysical store. (Or should I say do some online shopping during this time of quarantine?)

If you’ve ever been to a metaphysical store you have probably noticed these oils for sale. Probably some of the most popular ones have to do with either love or money. And speaking of money…the cost of these oils can get pretty expensive depending on the practitioner making these for you. Personally I like to make most of my oils at home as they are inexpensive and easy to make and I’ll tell you why…

The two things that are the MAIN ingredients are your ENERGY and your INTENTION. This is what truly gives the oil the powerful kick that you need and by making your own oils you can tailor it specifically with your intention and energy is best. Plus, as we will get into later you can source the ingredients for the oil yourself, perhaps grow most of them at home or in the environment around you and can really have a deeper connection with the energy that goes into your oil.

Spell oils can be used to anoint yourself or others. Or they can be used to anoint inanimate objects such as candles or your ritual tools. Before making your oil you need to decide what the oil will be used for. If the oil will be coming in contact with your skin then you will need to do your research on the ingredients that you are using in order to make sure they are safe for topical use! Some essential oils are not safe for topical use so it’s important to read your labels. Also some herbs WILL irritate the skin so please….make sure you do a little research before you go throwing stuff on your skin. If you ever have any question about potential allergic reaction and want to play it safe with your oil you can do a drop test: placing a drop of the oil on your skin and giving it 24 hours to see how the area of skin reacts in order to ensure there is no adverse reaction. If the oils are just going to be used on objects you wont be handling, ie. in ritual candles or spell bags then you can use whatever as long as they wont come in contact with the skin. Personally I like to just play it safe and use all topical safe ingredients just in case πŸ™‚

Now that you have the use figured out you’ll need 3 basic ingredients: The base/foundation/carrier oil, dried herbs, essential oil. O…and a jar to put them in, so I suppose 4. Four basic ingredients πŸ™‚

Carrier Oils

Carrier oils also called base or foundation oils are made from plants. Carrier oils are used to dilute the essential oils and “carry” them to your skin. There are many different types of oils you can use as carrier oils such as:

  • Avocado oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil
  • Almond oil
  • Sunflower oil
  • Rosehip oil
  • Grapeseed oil

…and many more. Before choosing an oil you may want to keep these few things in mind: Does the oil your using have a smell? How does the oil absorb in the skin if your using it topically? What’s your skin type? As some oils can worsen conditions like acne. And shelf life, as some hold longer than others?

OR…. you could just throw caution to the wind, embrace ‘The Fool’ energy and just go with whatever you like, can afford or is available πŸ™‚

Herbs

When it comes to the herbs MAKE SURE they are dried! Dried herbs hold well in your spell oil, if not they will rot, decay and cause bacteria in your oil so warning PLEASE make sure especially if you are growing or sourcing the herbs yourself that they are fully dried before using them!

As I mentioned earlier make sure to research what herbs you intend to use and whether they are safe with the skin: You’ll NEED to research BECAUSE… you want to choose the appropriate herbs for the intention you wish to put in your spell oil πŸ™‚ There’s no need to go overboard with herbs, I like to pick 1-3 that correspond with the energetic properties I wish to have in my oil!

If I can ever source my own materials I think that is THE best. Pictured above are a bouquet of roses I got for valentines day and have dried for this very use. The energy and intention put into selecting the flowers, the gifting process etc were specific energies to me and my life and I think that always makes your magick more powerful! If you can even source your herbs from your garden, yard, local park, forest, etc. I think that having something that is local to you is important. If not, no big deal, you can always buy them at your local metaphysical store or online too!

Once you have the dried herbs with the energetic properties that are in alignment with your intention go ahead and grind them down as fine as possible. During this process make sure to be putting your focus and intention into your work. Some like to say or think spells, or prayers, or whatever you want to call it. Do what feels right to you!

Essential Oils

I’ll make this part short and sweet as most of the information we have covered remains the same and is relevant πŸ™‚

When choosing your essential oil(s) keep these things in mind:

  • Is it safe to use topically? and is that what you’re going to be using it for?
  • What energetic properties do these oils have and do they correspond with my intention?
  • Does it smell suuuuuuuper nice and will it be pleasant to use πŸ™‚ lol

Just like with anything…do you research. Make sure what your using makes sense and that there will be no adverse reactions.

Bottles

There is all kinds of bottles available everywhere for really inexpensive. Personally I love to get mine from Hobby Lobby (if you have one in your area they do weekly 50% off sales on their items and you can get bottles like the ones pictured above for $1) Michael’s is another great store to check out for bottles or you can get it even at the Dollar store if you wish.

Corked bottles although look cool (in my opinion) can be problematic with oils as the cork will absorb any of the oil. This will cause the cork to erode and break apart into your oil and that is just no bueno! I recommend selecting a bottle with a metal lid as this will keep your oil air tight and protected πŸ™‚

FINALLY…

Mix all those goodies together in that jar you got, say the magick words and BAM !!!! You got you a spell oil on your hands my friend!!! And actually doing it will be much easier and probably far less painful than reading this blog! lol

It’s honestly way easy! Don’t over think it! Just do a little digging, make sure your knowledgeable about your ingredients and your good πŸ™‚

Like I said… it’s all about YOUR energy and YOUR intention that your putting into your craft that’s what makes it magick πŸ™‚

  1. Great post! You have inspired me to β€œuse the fool energy” and just do it. I am super excited to try this out. I have a yellow rose from my grandmother’s funeral I have been saving and what a great way to honor her memory and can use when I do ancestral work at my altar. Thanks again! Blessed be
