Mary-El Tarot- 2nd edition

The Mary-El Tarot comes in a durable, hard, magnetic closure lid, adorned with some of the beautiful imagery that we get to see in the deck. I’m always a big fan of a great box, I trust that this deck will stay protected and pristine …. well…maybe not pristine because I tend to be a little rough on cards when I shuffle lol but you know what I mean!

All of you little white book lovers will be sure to like the guidebook included. It’s quite a chunky, 192 page FULL COLOR ( which I love ) guidebook. Each card gets about 2 pages, there are also notes from the author and creator Marie White, several tarot spreads and some history and information into the tarot itself. I don’t always take the time to read the guidebooks included, but when there’s a pretty colored one included I am more likely to refer to it however… maybe because I’m a child lol

Originally published in 2012 this 78 card deck took 11 years in the making to come to fruition. The 2nd edition made some slight tweeking in order to bring improvements to the consumer. This editions cards are slightly smaller than your standard tarot size, so they are easy to handle and shuffle and come with silver gilded edges much like the Fountain Tarot. The cards have a slight gloss to them, nothing over powering ( cuz in my opinion sometimes that gloss get real real heavy like when people make poor makeup choices ) The card stock is a bit thinner than I’d care for BUT as we’ve talked about before were in the land of makes it super simple to shuffle which is nice of course though I hate that the textile feel of it doesn’t scream high quality. But it’s ok… overall between the artistry of the deck and quality its good!

The artistry on the cards is by far the reason why I just HAD to have this deck! As you can see to the right the deck is filled with all sorts of beautiful colors and even more impressive art work…

Some of my favorite cards in the Majors are pictured to the left. I feel these also demonstrate the versatility of the artist, each card so unique and quite beautiful as a stand-alone piece.

One of the things I think the artist does an amazing job with is in really incorporating and translating the elemental aspects of the cards. I really get into my feels with this deck whether I’m working with one card at a time or as a collection.

Some of the cards in the deck I am a bit lost on. This is a personal problem not a world-wide epidemic 🙂 Pictured right are a few of the Majors that I don’t quite click with! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bling, I clearly see what the artist drew, lol but it just doesn’t read the meaning of the card to me.

Using the Devil as an example: Yes, there’s a really cool picture of a Devil. But…I don’t get those feels of toxicity, addiction, lust, all that I normally associate with the meaning of the card just get’s lost in these pieces.

Overall I think it’s a very well made deck with beautiful imagery that is certainly unique! Clearly Mary-El has done well for itself and stood the test of times and quite frankly is very much still relevant today!

I forever will treasure having this deck in my collection and certainly look forward to continued use and connecting with the cards so that I may form a personal relationship with the deck.
